Packaging/Transportation/Quality

EaglePicher’s products fall into three categories: Diatomaceous Earth (DE), Perlite and Specialty Filter Aids. The products are processed from diatomite – a fossilized mineral of vegetable origin, Perlite – naturally occurring volcanic rock, and cellulose – specially selected bleached wood pulp, with and without DE.

The products are used as filtration aids, fillers and as soil amendments and conditioners. From ballparks to paint, from wine to water, EaglePicher Filtration & Minerals can deliver improvement.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH Return To Products & Services

Most EaglePicher Filtration & Minerals products are based on Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Diatomaceous earth, also called diatomite or kieselguhr, is a fossilized mineral of vegetable origin. It represents the accumulation of an enormous number of fossil diatoms. Diatoms are single cell plants of microscopic size. There are many varieties that live in both freshwater lakes and saltwater oceans, staying close to the surface where they form part of the abundant plankton. Alive, they are at the base of the food chain. Dead, they leave a tiny skeleton known as a frustule, often of great beauty and intricacy like microscopic jewels.

Whereas most other plants use solar energy to synthesize cellulose for their cell walls, the diatom has elected to extract amorphous silica from the water, building for itself what amounts to an elegant, but strong shell with highly symmetrical perforations.

Celatom® DE Filter Aids

Celatom® DE filter aids are available in a full range of grades /permeabilities to cover all your requirements. The lower permeability grades form filter cakes having small pores which produce a high degree of clarification. The higher permeability grades provide greater throughputs with corresponding clarity.

For almost 100 years DE filtration has been the workhorse of food and beverage processing and it continues to produce high quality filtrates more economically than most technologies. If one travels to the grocery store, almost every shelf will contain a product which has at some point been filtered by DE Some of these include: soft drinks, vegetable oils, fruit juices, beer and ales, wine, gelatin, pectin and alginates, animal oils, sweeteners (corn, beet and cane), soy sauce, monosodium glutamate (MSG).

AXIS® Soil Amendments

AXIS is a unique granular diatomaceous earth product that has been calcined at high temperatures to enhance its qualities for use as a soil amendment. Looking at the AXIS matrix under a scanning electron microscope shows why it works so well – it is made up of the fossilized remains of diatoms. The hard, amorphous silica-based diatom skeletons have pores designed by nature to accommodate air and water movement. The open cells of AXIS hold water in reserve until plant roots draw it out while also aiding air movement.

Research and tests at several universities prove the benefits of using AXIS.

  • At Ohio State University, AXIS was shown to help improve the performance of USGA-specified golf greens by making more water available to turf plants.
  • At the University of Florida, AXIS was shown to increase the vigor of Hibiscus in 1-gallon containers, resulting in a 39.9% size increase over plants grown in containers without AXIS.
  • At Rutgers University, AXIS was shown to outperform other inorganic amendments in USGA sand-based greens.
  • At Iowa State University, tests verified that AXIS maintains its physical integrity during freeze-thaw cycles, answering concerns about particle degradation during winter cycles.

Professionally, AXIS has been installed worldwide to improve turf and landscape installations. In Japan, AXIS was installed at the J-Village World Cup Soccer Training facility where 11 soccer fields [pitches] were constructed. Prior to construction, AXIS was compared with other domestic DE and clay-based amendments, and after 18 months of field testing, AXIS was chosen as the most efficient and cost effective amendment. The result is probably the world’s largest single application of inorganic soil amendment in a turf application.

PLAY BALL! ®Infield Conditioners

PLAY BALL!®, a DE product specifically developed for use on skinned infields, absorbs up to 130% of its weight in water. Yet, because it’s calcined, PLAY BALL!® is strong enough to resist compaction and crushing under foot. The product’s color has been designed to compliment typical infield soils. The low density and high absorptivity of PLAY BALL! add special qualities to an infield: PLAY BALL! will reduce the compaction of the infield which means that it is more resilient and there are fewer hard, erratic bounces; and PLAY BALL! is one of the most absorptive infield conditioners available which means that during periods of rain, infields will be dry faster and ready for play. It is no wonder that PLAY BALL! and AXIS are considered “nature’s sponges!” Lighter density- lighter bags make PLAY BALL!® easier to handle.

Floor Dry, Solid-A-Sorb®, Qualisorb

For over 50 years, EaglePicher Filtration & Minerals has been helping to clean up the world. From small floor spills to large-scale industrial accidents and hazardous waste spills, EP Filtration & Minerals products have met the challenge. EP Filtration & Minerals has been leading the way in absorbent technology since the 1940’s. Nature created diatomite, which is an extraordinary mineral because of its lightness and porosity.

PERLITE Return To Products & Services

Celatom Perlite is a hydrated, naturally occurring volcanic rock. Its unique structure consists of numerous concentric layers, similar to the layers on an onion. Its natural color ranges from light pearl gray to dark gray. This distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic siliceous rocks is that when heated above 1600°FD, it expands up to twenty times its original size. The expansion is due to the presence of approximately 5% combined water in the crude ore.

When processed at proper temperatures, the crude ore pops in a manner similar to popcorn. During the material processing, the combined water vaporizes, creating countless tiny bubbles that account for the amazing light weight and other exceptional properties of Celatom Perlite.

Celatom® Perlite Fine Filters

Perlite Filter Aids are available in a full range of grades / permeabilities with corresponding degrees of clarification. The products are functionally similar to DE filter aids, however they typically have bulk densities about half that of DE. Perlite is used to filter juices, wastewater, beverages, and industrial chemicals. They are produced from inert silicate minerals and thus meet the purity requirements of most applications.
